49ers’ Smith nearly leads big comeback

Before choosing the 49ers’ starting quarterback for next week, coach Mike Singletary said he needed to review the game film of the 24-21 loss to the Houston Texans.

But it’s hard to believe that film will contain a surprise ending: Alex Smith looks like the 49ers’ new leading man.

Coming off the bench at halftime Sunday, Smith nearly rallied the 49ers from a 21-point deficit, taking jumper cables to an offensive engine that had long looked kaput. He completed 15 of 22 passes for 206 yards and three touchdowns.

In other words, Smith needed only one half to approach Shaun Hill’s best yardage total of the season (209 yards on Sept. 13). He established an immediate rapport with Vernon Davis, who caught all three touchdown passes, and Michael Crabtree, who had five catches for 56 yards in his NFL debut.

49ers’ Crabtree catches on fast

Maybe the kid was right.

Maybe the 49ers should have been paying Michael Crabtree the same money – or even more – than the Raiders gave their rookie, Darrius Heyward-Bey.

Maybe that 71-day holdout could have been averted all along.

Crabtree made his pro debut for the 49ers in Sunday’s 24-21 loss to the Houston Texans, and the kid didn’t look like much of a rookie.

Gore using bye week to rehab ankle, work with Crabtree in preparation for Texans

Frank Gore was among a small group of San Francisco 49ers to stick around during the entire bye week.

He was looking forward to working hard with rookie receiver and top draft pick Michael Crabtree, who finally signed Oct. 7 and is set to make his NFL debut next Sunday at Houston.

“Me and Crabtree are going to get it done,” Gore said.

Mike Singletary planned to spend the off week evaluating talent, perhaps making some changes to his starting rotation and finding the best 53 players.

Getting Gore back will be a big part of that process.

Crabtree to start Sunday, teammate says

A week and half of impressive practices apparently have offset a 10-week contract standoff for Michael Crabtree. The 49ers’ first-round draft pick not only figures to see plenty of playing time Sunday against the Texans, according to wide receiver Josh Morgan, Crabtree will start the game opposite Isaac Bruce.

“They gave him my spot,” Morgan told the Santa Rosa Press-Democrat on Monday. “So if he’s going to be in there, I might as well help him out so I can make sure he gets it right.”

While the rest of the 49ers enjoyed four days off over the bye week, Crabtree stayed at the team’s practice facility, furiously cramming for his debut. By all accounts, the sessions went very well.

Morgan, quarterback Alex Smith, running back Frank Gore and wide receivers coach Jerry Sullivan also were on hand. Gore, who will return to the lineup after missing the past two games with an ankle injury, said he was impressed by the rookie.
