A Return to Glory?

Many NFL observers are declaring this year’s 49ers team to be one of the best in recent memory. Analysts have said they underachieved last year with their 8-8 record. Their defense is poised to be one of the best in the league, headlined by perennial Pro Bowl linebacker Patrick Willis. He is an absolute hoss on that defense, which also includes star corner Nate Clements and linebacker Takeo Spikes. Their defense allowed the fourth lowest points in the league last year.

Their offense, on the other hand, is what holds them back. Yes, they have a keeper at tight end in Vernon Davis and a potential Pro Bowl receiver in Michael Crabtree. Yes, they have the man-beast Frank Gore anchoring their running game. But beyond that, what is there? Gore has had a history with injuries and his backup is Glen Coffee. Meh. The Niners have acquired Ted Ginn Jr. from the Dolphins, but he is a special teams guy and not much else. Then there is always the Alex Smith conundrum at quarterback. The guy has shown little to no improvement in his playing career. The Niners have insisted he is their frachise QB, but he’s not showing he wants that title.

The one thing I feel really good about regarding this team is head coach Mike Singletary. He is one of the best coaches in football. He will straighten out any player that makes a mistake or doesn’t execute.

Overall, I see the 49ers finishing 9-7 this year, one win better than last year. One ESPN personality said they could go 11-5, but that’s just absurd given their quarterback situation especially.

49ers’ Crabtree catches on fast

Maybe the kid was right.

Maybe the 49ers should have been paying Michael Crabtree the same money – or even more – than the Raiders gave their rookie, Darrius Heyward-Bey.

Maybe that 71-day holdout could have been averted all along.

Crabtree made his pro debut for the 49ers in Sunday’s 24-21 loss to the Houston Texans, and the kid didn’t look like much of a rookie.

Gore using bye week to rehab ankle, work with Crabtree in preparation for Texans

Frank Gore was among a small group of San Francisco 49ers to stick around during the entire bye week.

He was looking forward to working hard with rookie receiver and top draft pick Michael Crabtree, who finally signed Oct. 7 and is set to make his NFL debut next Sunday at Houston.

“Me and Crabtree are going to get it done,” Gore said.

Mike Singletary planned to spend the off week evaluating talent, perhaps making some changes to his starting rotation and finding the best 53 players.

Getting Gore back will be a big part of that process.

Crabtree to start Sunday, teammate says

A week and half of impressive practices apparently have offset a 10-week contract standoff for Michael Crabtree. The 49ers’ first-round draft pick not only figures to see plenty of playing time Sunday against the Texans, according to wide receiver Josh Morgan, Crabtree will start the game opposite Isaac Bruce.

“They gave him my spot,” Morgan told the Santa Rosa Press-Democrat on Monday. “So if he’s going to be in there, I might as well help him out so I can make sure he gets it right.”

While the rest of the 49ers enjoyed four days off over the bye week, Crabtree stayed at the team’s practice facility, furiously cramming for his debut. By all accounts, the sessions went very well.

Morgan, quarterback Alex Smith, running back Frank Gore and wide receivers coach Jerry Sullivan also were on hand. Gore, who will return to the lineup after missing the past two games with an ankle injury, said he was impressed by the rookie.
