Many NFL observers are declaring this year's 49ers team to be one of the best in recent memory. Analysts have said they underachieved last year with their 8-8 record. Their defense is poised to be one of the best in the league, headlined by perennial Pro Bowl linebacker Patrick Willis. He is an absolute hoss on that defense, which also includes star corner Nate Clements and linebacker Takeo Spikes. Their defense allowed the fourth lowest points in the league last year.

Their offense, on the other hand, is what holds them back. Yes, they have a keeper at tight end in Vernon Davis and a potential Pro Bowl receiver in Michael Crabtree. Yes, they have the man-beast Frank Gore anchoring their running game. But beyond that, what is there? Gore has had a history with injuries and his backup is Glen Coffee. Meh. The Niners have acquired Ted Ginn Jr. from the Dolphins, but he is a special teams guy and not much else. Then there is always the Alex Smith conundrum at quarterback. The guy has shown little to no improvement in his playing career. The Niners have insisted he is their frachise QB, but he's not showing he wants that title.

The one thing I feel really good about regarding this team is head coach Mike Singletary. He is one of the best coaches in football. He will straighten out any player that makes a mistake or doesn't execute.

Overall, I see the 49ers finishing 9-7 this year, one win better than last year. One ESPN personality said they could go 11-5, but that's just absurd given their quarterback situation [...]

While the rest of the 49ers enjoyed four days off over the bye week, Crabtree stayed at the team's practice facility, furiously cramming for his debut. By all accounts, the sessions went very well.
